Some simple options to consider:
If you running Windows then we recommend a minimum of 2Gb RAM for Vista and 1Gb for XP. For optimum performance we recommend 2Gb for XP and 3Gb for Vista ( 32bit ), 4Gb Vista (64bit). Increasing memory is one of the cheapest and most effective way to improve the performance of your PC whether a desktop or laptop. Price range: typically $50-$100 including installation. Note with 32 bit operating systems you cannot utilise more than 3Gb so there is no point increasing your memory above this value. However laptops from 2-3 years ago typically came with 256Mb to 512Mb and hence a significant improvement in performance i available if you have one of these machines. It is not unusual for boot time to reduce from the 3-5 minute range to around 1 minute after such an upgrade.
If you are using one hard drive and it is more than 50% full then you would be better splitting the data onto a separate hard drive with the OS remaining on your current disc. This is because accessing the OS and the data on the same disc slows down the system plus if you have a disc more than 50% full then the data is likely to be fragmented across the disc slowing it down. Price range: typically $90 - $225 including installation.
If you have a laptop we can swap out that full disk with a new much larger capacity disk and also in many cases change from a slow 5400 rpm disk to a fast 7200 rpm disk. An old laptop is likely to have around 60-120Gb disk, we can supply a 500Gb drive for around $150 ( excluding installation ). Call us to discuss further.
What graphics chip/card are you using and how much memory is available. If you are using an on board graphics chip then with an older machine the memory is likely to be limited and you would be better to add a dedicated graphics card. Price range $70 - $200 including installation.
You may be able to change the processor either by swapping the processor on the motherboard or by swapping the motherboard and adding a new processor at the same time. This can be a very cost effective solution. Price range $150 - $350 including installation.
If you have a machine that is a few years old you may benefit from upgrading your optical drive. You can get a dual layer DVD writer or even a Blu Ray one to upgrade your PC. Price range $60 - $200 including installation.
This may seen an odd suggestion, but in fact the case and power supply are quite a significant element of the cost of new PC, typically around 20-40% of the total cost. So you can save quite a bit of money by upgrading the guts of your machine. Price range $300 - $700 including installation.
